There is so much information available these days about pet food, and so many varieties that it can be difficult to know what’s best for your dog. While there may not be one best food for your dog there are certain things that you should know to look for – or not look for – in a dog food. For example, keep an eye out for ingredients – regardless if you feed kibble, pre-made raw or wet, and in treats. Did you know that the dog food companies are held to low standards which allow them to place potentially harmful products on the shelves, available to consumers and their pets: Propylene Glycol (found in windshield washer fluid) and BHA (used to put down small animals) are ingredients in some pet treats.
Always make sure to read over what’s in your dogs’ food.
A couple of things to look for when picking out store-bought dog food:
- A known meat source is the first ingredient example: chicken, salmon, lamb, etc.
- Any dog-safe Fruits and vegetables.
- Any type of probiotics and prebiotics.
- No corn, wheat or soy (in any form)
- No animal bi-products.
- No artificial flavours, colours or preservatives.
- Wholesome whole grains.
- Gluten free
If you were able to check mark every box on the list, then you’ve got a good quality dog food.
For those who choose raw diet or organic diet there are a variety of in-store brands that can be purchased, or you can make your own diet based off of diets (such as the BARF – Bones And Raw Food – Diet) or your dog’s specific nutritional requirements. Home-made dog food can be a great option – letting you create a solid health food for your dog, or even organic dog food – if you are willing to invest the time into preparing foods, whether raw or cooked – and educating yourself on the nutritional requirements of your pet. If possible, it is advisable to prepare your dog’s home-made food with the direction and aid of a veterinarian or animal nutritionist.
